Mary Johnson

Mary Johnson was the mother of Lida Isabel Johson Newman. We know that she came from a close family. Two of her brothers were Henry Johnson, Lemuel Johnson and her sister was Eliza Johnson Ross. She may have had more siblings.

Lemuel Johsom married Ora (lmaiden name unknown), they had a son named John L. Johnson and a daughter Doris Johnson. Eliza married Clifton Ross. On February 20, 1904 their daughter Mae Helen was born. As an adult, Helen married William Henry Sugland on December 27, 1930.

When Lida Isabel Johnson was about 12 or 13 her mother died. Eliza raised Lida with Helen.

These pictures of Mary Johnson (above) and Lida Isabel Johnson (below) age 4 were taken in 1905.

117 1/2 P Street NW

My mother was Lida Isabel Johnson Newman.

In this picture, taken in 1946, she is standing in front of her home at 117 1/2 P Street.

Lida Isabel Johnson was born on September 1, 1900 to John Atkins and Mary Johnson. This picture was taken when she was about 5 months old.

Mary Johnson was from Virginia. Two of her brothers were Lemuel Johnson and Henry Johnson. Her sister was Eliza Johnson Ross.

This picture of her may have been taken in during the 1890's.

This is a picture of John Atkins (possibly taken in the late 1890's). He had a brother, Thomas, and a sister, Cecile whom we called "Cecie".

The Atkins family was from Virgina, however during my lifetime, my maternal grandfather owned a home at 452 Ridge Street NW, Washington D.C.

Introduction

Welcome to P Street NW!

I am Louise Newman Montgomery.

During the mid-1920's my grandparents, William Robert Newman, Sr and Mary Frances Proctor Newman purchased a home at 125 P Street NW in Washington D.C. Most likely this move is how our family began to grow on P Street. By 1930, my mother moved to 117 1/2 P Street.

Though our parents (Paul Augustus Newman and Lida Isabel Johnson Newman) seperated when we were young, my siblings (Roland Waverly Newman, Arthur Eugene Newman, Jerome Augustus Newman, Esther Jean Newman Richardson, Herman Francis Newman) and I were all shaped by our connection to P Street NW.

The house next door to my paternal grandparents at 123 P Street NW, was purchased by the Montgomery family. Raymond A. Montgomery, Sr and Viola Watson Montgomery had a house full. Living there was Raymond Jr., Harold, Charles, Marion Louise and Reginald, with more on the way. While living on P Street their household grew to include Emma, Constance, Miriam, Elizabeth and Seward.

The family was quite nice, especially Raymond, Jr. He won my heart. We married and began a family of our own with Raymond Augustus III, Joyce Ann, Joan Andrea, and Janice Anita.

As families do, ours grew and we eventually moved away from P Street. Often, my children, neices, nephews, cousins and their children ask for stories or photographs from the time our family lived on P Street and beyond. I am excited to share information with you via this blog.
